What is a Spanish immersion camp?
A Spanish immersion camp puts children in a place where Spanish is the language of daily life. They do not only study it in a classroom. They hear it at breakfast, use it to buy an ice cream and need it to make friends with local teenagers.
That is why immersion works faster than weekly lessons at home. Children use the language many times a day, in real situations, and the results show quickly in how confident they feel.
How our Spanish classes work
Every camper has 20 hours of Spanish a week with qualified teachers. Classes have up to 12 children, so everyone speaks in every lesson. Teachers use games, songs and real conversations instead of long grammar drills. In class, teachers use Spanish as much as possible. Staff also speak English, and some speak German, French and Dutch, so a child is never stuck.
On day one, each camper takes a short level test. We then place them in a class that matches their level. A beginner and an advanced speaker never sit in the same class.
Levels: from beginner to advanced
| Level | What your child can do when they arrive | Roughly equal to |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Knows little or no Spanish | A1 |
| Elementary | Knows basic words and simple sentences | A2 |
| Intermediate | Can hold a simple conversation | B1 |
| Advanced | Speaks with confidence and wants to polish it | B2 |
The last column uses the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which many schools use. It is a rough guide only.
Spanish all day, not just in class
After class, the city becomes the classroom. Campers order at the market, ask for directions, take part in a paella workshop and join excursions to the old town and the City of Arts and Sciences. In the evenings, talent shows and beach games bring Spanish and international campers together. Every conversation is more practice.
What will my child learn in two weeks?
Two weeks will not make a child fluent, and no honest camp promises that. It will do three useful things:
- It builds confidence. Children stop being afraid to speak.
- It adds a lot of useful words and phrases, and improves listening and pronunciation.
- It makes Spanish fun, so children want to keep learning at home.
Children who stay four weeks (both sessions) have more time to move up a level.
How progress is checked
The level test on day one gives each child a starting point. Teachers watch progress in class every day. At the end, each camper goes home with a certificate that shows their level and progress, so parents and school teachers can see what was achieved.
A typical day
- 8:30 Breakfast and the plan for the day.
- 9:30 Spanish classes in small groups.
- 14:00 Lunch and a short siesta.
- 16:30 Beach, sports, workshops or a city trip.
- 21:00 Evening events such as talent shows and movie nights.
Activities that keep Spanish fun
Afternoons are for adventure. Campers choose from surf, paddle boarding and kayaking, football and beach volleyball, a paella workshop, art and flamenco dance, and a day at the Oceanogràfic aquarium. A weekend trip adds a full day of hiking and swimming in a river. Read more about a day at our summer camp in Valencia.
